Hello. Today I want to share a review on the next
M.2 NVMe solid-state drive with a cooling radiator, which I visited in my
hands. It's about Patriot SSDs called 256GB Viper VPN100.
I took the technical specifications from the
manufacturer’s website, because the box shows the speeds for larger disks.

As you can see from the characteristics above, up to
3000MB/s for reading and up to 1000MB/s for writing are declared, and for 1TB
and 2TB drives, the write speed is 3000MB/s.
The 256 GB M.2 SSD Viper VPN100 is delivered in a
beautiful small box, which is decorated in red and black tones. The front
side shows the model name of the solid state drive and its volume. On the back
side in several languages is told about the
speed characteristics.
Translation into Russian is worth
rethinking.Packaging SSD is made in the form of a booklet. On the left
side are the main areas of application of the M.2 SSD Viper VPN100: gaming
computer, content creation, video processing and other professional
tasks.
On the right side, a solid-state drive itself is
visible through a transparent window.Inside, the NVMe M.2 SSD is in a
transparent blister that easily opens into two halves.
The dimensions of the disk are 22 * 80
* 10.5mm, and the weight is 25g. The controller is used by Phison E12, and
the memory is TLC. The cache memory is 512MB, which is a good indicator
for such an amount of SSD.
380TB MTBF and manufacturer gives 3 years
warranty. Phison E12 has 2 cores with ARM architecture, PCI Express 3.0
interface with 4 lines.
To cool the SSD, an aluminum radiator is used,
which is fixed on the board using hot-melt adhesive, In any case, I could not remove it without damaging
the chips. Inside the radiator is hollow, which further increases the area
of heat
dissipation.
There is a sticker on the back of the blue board, upon
removal of which the user loses the warranty. The model and capacity of
the M.2 SSD are listed here. This PCIe3x4 SSD will be tested on the following

After connecting, the disk must be initialized
using the operating system. After that, the solid state drive becomes
visible. 238GB is available to the end user.
To upgrade the M.2 NVMe SSD firmware, a utility was
downloaded from the manufacturer’s website, all of whose functionality is
visible in the screenshot below.
In idle temperature, the M.2 NVMe SSD is between 32
and 34 degrees, and the maximum during the preparation of this review, the
Viper VPN100 warmed up to 49 degrees and this is an excellent temperature with
the declared maximum of 70 degrees.Using CrystalDiskMark as an example, we can
see when testing files in 16GB how the speed drops after filling the cache.
In user testing, I copied a folder with a capacity of
22GB with the NVMe M.2 SSD Kingston A1000 480GB and the speed dropped from
600MB/s to 300MB/s, when it was left to copy about 10GB.
But when copying a folder of the same volume inside
the Viper VPN100 256GB SSD itself, the speed briefly dropped to 60MB/s almost
at the very end, but as a result it went up to 350MB/s. What can be summed up
with NVMe PCIe M.2 SSD Viper VPN100 256GB?
If you have the choice of switching from a hard drive,
and there are not enough speeds for SATA drives, then you should pay attention
to this model of solid-state drive.
Due to the presence of an aluminum radiator, the NVMe
M.2 SSD does not overheat during operation, but it can not be used in
ultrabooks due to the increased thickness. The speeds stated on the
manufacturer’s website were fully confirmed.
